Chapter TWELVE

kkYour club is perfect? You're happy? That's

what you wanted to tell us?" Mom asked.

"No, I—there's this—yes, that's all."

I didn't even sound like me. My voice was kind of

stretched out. And really prissy.

I fought to say something else, but my throat

closed up completely. I felt as if I were strangling!

Finally I gave up. I stared at my place mat.

As soon as I stopped trying to talk, my throat

relaxed.

"Have some eggs," Dad offered, scooping this

week's egg surprise onto a plate for me.

"Thank you," I replied politely.

1 didn't know what else to do, and I was hungry,

so I ate breakfast, It was probably gross. Dad could

have made scrambled eggs with fried worms and I

wouldn't have noticed.

Every time I thought about someone else controlling

what I could say and do, I shook with terror.

What was going on in Shadyside?

Why would someone want to control sixth

graders? Why would someone want to turn us all

into sixth-grade zombies?

After breakfast I called Mark. "I tried to tell Mom

and Dad about the brainwashing," I told him.

"You did?" He sounded shocked. But hopeful. "So what happened?"

"It was horrible! I tried to explain, but instead I

started babbling about what a wonderful club it

was. It was like I couldn't control my own mouth. I'd

think one thing—but then other words would come

out."

Total silence on the other end of the phone.

I waited a minute, then asked, "Are you there?"

"Still here. Wow. But you can talk to me about it."

He was right. "Yeah. I guess."

"Probably because we're both in it. It doesn't matter what you tell me, because I already know."

I shuddered. "This is sooo creepy."

"I'm going to try to tell my parents," Mark

announced. "I'll talk to you later." He hung up.

I waited awhile, but he didn't call back.

I stayed close to my room for the rest of the
